Where do I get the card?
To obtain an Aurora Public Library card, which will allow you to check out materials and establish an online library account, you will need to visit the Checkout Desk of one of our seven branch libraries.
If you are a Colorado resident and would like to use our databases or place holds on items, you can register for a temporary account. This limited account expires after 14 days, but you can convert it to a library card by visiting the Checkout Desk at one of our branches. Temporary accounts cannot be used for computer access or checkouts.
What do I need to bring with me to get the card?
There is no charge for a library card. However, adults (ages 18 and over) must provide proof of Colorado residency and a valid photo identification. Some examples of proof of residency include:
- a bill (e.g. phone, utility) with your name and Colorado address on it;
- mail addressed to you at your Colorado address;
- personal checks printed with your name and Colorado address;
- a receipt with your name and Colorado address on it; or
- a payroll check stub with your name and Colorado address on it.
Children (under age 18) may receive a card when accompanied by a parent or guardian who meets the above criteria. Please keep in mind that the card holder or guardian is responsible for all lost, damaged and overdue items.
Where can I use the card?
- All Aurora Public Library branches
- All Denver Public Library branches
- Most metro-area public libraries
- Select libraries throughout Colorado
What if I lose the card?
If your card is lost or stolen, or if your address changes, you MUST notify the library immediately by calling 303-739-6600. Replacement cost for a lost card is $2.00.
What else do I need to know about the card?
Computer Use:
In order to allow fair use of our computers, Aurora Public Library has installed a PC Reservation system. You will need to have a current Aurora Public Library card in order to use a library computer. If all computers are being used, you can use your library card number to reserve a 30-minute session on the next available computer.
Loan periods:
Books, audio cassettes and CDs may be checked out for three weeks. Videos and DVDs may be checked out for one week. You may renew any item up to four times if the item is not on hold. Each library card is limited to a total of 7 DVDs or videos checked out at one time.
Call 303-739-6644 for 24-hour telephone renewal, or visit our patron login page to conveniently renew your books online. Have your library card number ready for either service. For more information about renewals, please read the library's Renewal Policy.
Overdue materials:
Materials are overdue the day after the due date. Fines are waived on three-week materials that are returned within two days after the due date. Fines are 20 cents per day, per item, from the due date to a maximum of $3.00 per item. Librarians may notify you if your total outstanding fines exceed $5.00.
Materials that are lost, damaged or stolen will be assessed for the full purchase price of the item plus a reprocessing fee. Damaged materials remain the property of the Aurora Public Library. Library privileges may be revoked for any total over $5.00 for:
- Overdue materials
- Damaged material
- Lost material
- One item overdue or not returned
Charges over $25.00 may be referred to a collection agency. For more information about fines and overdue materials, please read the library's Fines Policy.
